SOJUTSU WORKSHOPS & INTENSIVES

SOJUTSU WORKSHOP

6-WEEK SOJUTSU INTENSIVES

The Sojutsu Foundations workshop introduces students to essential spear handling, precision striking, footwork, distance control, formations and tactical exercises.

Workshops are kept intentionally limited so participants receive close instruction and enough time to experience each stage of the program.

6-WEEK SOJUTSU INTENSIVES

6-WEEK SOJUTSU INTENSIVES

Students who want to continue can join seasonal six-week Sojutsu intensives. Each season provides additional technical development through kata, advanced spear skills, tactical training and progressive challenges.

The intensive format gives students time to sharpen their skills while still making Sojutsu feel like a special training experience.

Continued Sojutsu Progression

Continued Sojutsu Progression

Students can continue building experience through future Sojutsu seasons, workshops, achievements and the broader Douglas Martial Arts weapons pathway.

Train With the Interactive Sojutsu Smart Manual

Every Sojutsu participant receives access to a professionally designed Smart Training Manual that supports both in-class learning and guided practice at home.

Students can scan QR codes to watch technique demonstrations, review kata, study spear tactics and revisit important training concepts. Built-in tracking, achievements and progression elements help turn the manual into an active part of the training experience—not simply something students read once and set aside.

 SMART MANUAL INCLUDES:

  • QR-linked Sojutsu training videos
  • Guided technique and kata review
  • Spear tactics and training concepts
  • Progress and achievement tracking
  • A clear pathway through each stage
  • Continued learning outside the workshop

Who Can Join Sojutsu Training?

Sojutsu training is designed for students looking for a unique martial arts weapons challenge. Depending on the workshop or intensive, registration may be available to selected youth, teens and adults.

Some training opportunities may be reserved for current Douglas Martial Arts weapons students, while others may be open to students with different levels of martial arts experience.

Current Weapons Students

Expand your understanding of distance, timing and weapon movement beyond Bojutsu and Saijutsu.

Taekwondo Students

Explore how familiar stances, footwork and body mechanics change when applied to a long weapon.

New Participants

Selected Sojutsu opportunities may be suitable for people who are new to martial arts weapons training.

Safe and Structured Spear Training

Safety is built into every stage of Sojutsu training. Students begin with clear handling rules, controlled movement and an understanding of safe training distance before progressing into partner or group exercises.

Training equipment is selected according to the activity, and all partner drills, formations and scenarios are carefully supervised. Students are never asked to participate in uncontrolled weapon sparring.

A Safe Approach to Spear Training

  • Progressive skill development
  • Clear weapon-handling expectations
  • Controlled partner exercises
  • Appropriate training equipment
  • Closely supervised formations
  • No uncontrolled spear sparring

Sojutsu Spear Training FAQ

Sojutsu is the traditional Japanese martial art of the spear. At Douglas Martial Arts, students learn safe spear handling, precision striking, footwork, distance control, kata, tactical movement and coordinated formations.

Our Sojutsu program combines traditional martial arts concepts with a modern, structured training experience. Students develop technical skill through individual exercises, partner drills, team activities and carefully designed training scenarios.

Sojutsu is not currently offered as a regular weekly class. Training is available through limited specialty workshops and seasonal six-week intensives at Douglas Martial Arts.

This format allows students to explore Sojutsu in a focused and immersive way while keeping each training opportunity fresh and exciting.

Previous martial arts or weapons experience is not always required, although eligibility may vary depending on the specific workshop or intensive.

Some Sojutsu opportunities may be open to beginners, while others may be designed for current Douglas Martial Arts students or participants with previous weapons training.

Registration inclusions may vary depending on the workshop or intensive, but Sojutsu programs may include:

  • Professional, hands-on instruction
  • Training spear
  • Access to the interactive Sojutsu Smart Training Manual
  • QR-linked technique, kata and training videos
  • Progress and achievement materials
  • Guided home-training resources
  • Certificates, progression items or other program-specific materials

A Sojutsu Foundations workshop is a focused introduction to the program. Students explore essential spear handling, precision striking, footwork, distance control, formations and tactical exercises during a single specialty training experience.

A six-week Sojutsu intensive provides more time for progressive development. Students can work more deeply on kata, advanced techniques, spear tactics and structured challenges over several weeks.

The workshop introduces students to the system. The intensive gives them an opportunity to continue developing their skills.
