Bōjutsu is much more than learning to spin a staff.

Students develop strong fundamentals through strikes, blocks, stances, footwork, kata, partner drills and controlled combat exercises. Visual techniques and flowing combinations add creativity and coordination, creating a balanced program that is technical, challenging and genuinely fun to learn.


No previous martial arts experience is required. Every skill is introduced progressively so beginners can start comfortably while experienced students continue finding new challenges.

 While the Bō remains the primary focus, each class includes a brief introduction to the foundational movement of another traditional weapon—including Sai, Tonfa, Nunchaku or Kama. 

Who Can Join Bojutsu?

 Bōjutsu is open to students ages nine and up, from complete beginners to experienced martial artists. Techniques can be adjusted to provide an appropriate challenge while everyone progresses through the same structured curriculum. 

Complete Beginners

 No previous martial arts or weapons experience is required. New students learn grip, stance, movement and weapon safety step by step. 

Youth & Adults

 Bōjutsu develops coordination, focus and confidence while providing a unique physical and mental challenge for different ages.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bojutsu

Bōjutsu is the martial art of staff fighting. Students learn weapon control, strikes, blocks, footwork, kata, partner drills, controlled sparring and dynamic visual techniques. 


Not at all. Most students can begin with no previous martial arts or weapons experience. Fundamentals and safety expectations are introduced progressively. 


Douglas Martial Arts accepts Bōjutsu students ages nine and up. Youth, teens and adults can train through the same structured curriculum at an appropriate level of challenge. 


Comfortable athletic clothing is perfect for your first class. New students receive a Bō and interactive Smart Manual with registration. The program T-shirt and any personal secondary weapons are purchased separately. 


Safety and weapon control are built into every stage of training. Students begin with proper handling, spacing and controlled movement before progressing into partner drills or supervised sparring. 


Yes. Students progress through a structured chevron-ranking system from beginner levels through Black Chevron. Advancement is based on technical ability, control, consistency and readiness.
